在写或读分数时（1/2和1/4除外），我们用基数词和序数词的组合（即分子用基数词，分母用序数词）：

由一个整数＋一个分数构成的数后面可直接跟一个名词的复数形式：

加上of：

a quarter of a second四分之一秒（有 a）

half+of也可使用，但是of可省略：

Half（of） my earnings go in tax．

我挣到的钱有一半要纳税。

351 序数词的几点注意事项

A 注意fifth，eighth，ninth和twelfth等词的不规则拼写法。B 序数词用数字表示时，需在数字后面加上书写形式的最后两个字母（表示日期时除外）：

C 在复合序数词中，and的用法与在基数词中的用法相同：

序数词之前通常要用定冠词the：

国王等的多少“世”，要用罗马数字来表示：

但在口语中用序数词时，需在前面加上定冠词the，读做：

一周的每天和12个月份的名称的头一个字母必须要大写。

日期要用序数词来表示，所以在口语中说：

March the tenth／the tenth of March 3月10日

另外，它们有许多种写法，如March the tenth可写成：

B 公元的纪年

在读或写公元的纪年时，用hundred作单位而不用thousand。

1987年可读做 nineteen hundred and eighty－seven或略去hun- dred而读做nineteen eighty－seven。

在公元前的纪年后面加BC（=Before Christ基督降生前）。公元以后的纪年有时可以在前面加上AD（=Anno Domini，inthe year of the Lord耶稣纪元或公元）。一般读法有两种：1500 BC可读做one thousand five hundred BC或 fifteen hun- dred BC。

复数形式

ounce， pound和ton当名词用时，复数形式可加s。但stone和hundredweight的复数形式不加s。如我们既可说six poundof sugar，也可说six pounds of sugar（六磅糖）。但是，ten hundredweight of coal（十英担煤）只有这一种说法。这些词作为复合形容词的组成部分时不加s：

a ten－ton lorry一辆载重十吨的货车

kilo或kilogram当名词用时，复数形式常加s：

two kilos of apples／two kilograms of apples两公斤苹果

B 长度单位

英国的长度单位列表如下：

复数形式不止一英寸／英里／厘米时，通常用它们的复数形式：

不止一英尺时，既可用foot，也可用feet。但在计量高度时，通常用feet：

six foot tall／six feet tall六英尺高

two foot long／two feet long两英尺长

作为复合形容词的一部分时，以上这些词一概不用复数形式：

a six－inch ruler六英寸长的尺子

C 容量单位

D 英国传统的度量单位是ounce（盎司），inch（英寸），pint（品脱）等。

但目前有逐渐改用公制的趋向。
